Detailed Overview of RPLI Late Fee & Default Penalty Calculator

The RPLI Late Fee Calculator is an official financial estimation utility designed to compute exact default penalty fines, overdue premium arrears, and revival costs for policyholders insured under Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI). Operating strictly under Rule 42 of the Post Office Life Insurance Rules, this calculator eliminates guesswork by applying statutory 1% monthly interest rates, evaluating policy lapse thresholds (6 months vs. 12 months), and providing an itemized revival schedule for immediate submission at any India Post branch.

🧮

Rule 42 Precision

Computes 1% per month (₹1.00 per ₹100) default interest on all overdue installments.

Lapse Classification

Instantly alerts whether the policy is within permissible default or requires a medical declaration.

Understanding Policy Default vs. Policy Lapse in RPLI

It is vital for every RPLI policyholder to distinguish between a policy in Default and a policy that has formally Lapsed. While a defaulted policy can be revived smoothly at any post counter with a nominal fine, a lapsed policy legally terminates life insurance protection until formal reinstatement approval is granted.

Policy in Default (Active Cover)

A policy enters default when the premium is not paid by the last working day of the due month. If paid within the allowable window (up to 6 months for newer policies or up to 12 months for mature policies), life cover remains intact, and the policyholder simply pays the outstanding premium plus 1% late fee without any medical re-examination.

Policy Formally Lapsed (Void Cover)

If premiums remain unpaid beyond 6 months (for policies in force less than 3 years) or beyond 12 months (for policies in force 3 years or longer), the policy officially lapses. In the event of death during lapse, no claim is admissible. To revive, the insurant must pay all arrears plus penalties and provide a certified Medical Declaration of Good Health.

Step-by-Step Procedure to Revive an RPLI Policy

Follow these official steps to reinstate your Rural Postal Life Insurance policy and ensure your family's financial protection remains uninterrupted.

Step 1

Use our calculator to find your exact principal arrears and 1% default fine.

Step 2

Verify Lapse Status

Step 3

Visit Post Office / IPPB

Deposit the revival sum at any Head/Branch Post Office or pay online via IPPB app.

Step 4

Collect Receipt

Obtain the stamped counter acknowledgment; your policy status is updated to active.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about RPLI late fees, default penalty calculations, and policy revival rules

Under Rule 42, late fee = Math.ceil(Monthly Premium × 0.01) × Number of Overdue Months. For example, on a monthly premium of ₹500, the monthly fine is ₹5.00 (1% of 500). For 3 months overdue, the total late fee is 3 × ₹5 = ₹15, making total revival payable = ₹1,515.
Yes. The official IPPB (India Post Payments Bank) mobile app and the India Post Customer Portal (pli.indiapost.gov.in) support online renewal payments. The portal automatically computes the 1% late fee and lets you pay via UPI, Net Banking, or Debit Cards, provided your policy has not crossed the formal lapse threshold.
If death occurs during the permissible default window (before the 6-month or 12-month lapse limit), the death claim is admissible; however, the post office will deduct all outstanding premium arrears and accrued 1% default penalties from the final claim settlement paid to the nominee. If the policy had formally lapsed, no claim is payable.
No. A medical certificate is only mandatory if the policy has officially lapsed (unpaid for more than 6 months if under 3 years old, or more than 12 months if 3 years or older). If you pay before the lapse limit, no medical checkup is required.
